China Deepens Indonesia Ties as Southeast Asia Balances US Pressure

China expands defence and diplomatic ties with Indonesia as Jakarta balances relations with Beijing and Washington amid rising regional tensions.
Beijing is strengthening defence, diplomatic and economic engagement with Jakarta as Indonesia seeks to maintain strategic ties with both China and the United States amid rising regional tensions.
China-Indonesia Dialogue Expands
China stepped up its diplomatic and defence engagement with Indonesia on Friday as senior officials from both countries held talks covering security, politics, defence and economic cooperation.
Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi met his Indonesian counterpart Sugiono in Jakarta, while Chinese Defence Minister Dong Jun held discussions with Indonesian Defence Minister Sjafrie Sjamsoeddin.
The meetings form part of a new “2+2” dialogue mechanism involving the foreign and defence ministers of both countries. The talks come as Southeast Asian nations face increasing pressure to navigate intensifying strategic competition between Beijing and Washington.
Wang Yi Signals Closer Partnership
Wang, visiting Jakarta for the first time in two years, said the new dialogue mechanism came at an important moment for both countries.
He argued that unilateralism and what he described as hegemonic actions were creating challenges for global cooperation and stability. Wang said China wanted to build high-level cooperation with Indonesia.
The discussions are expected to cover bilateral economic relations, political ties, defence cooperation and wider international and regional developments.
For Beijing, deeper engagement with Jakarta provides an opportunity to strengthen relations with one of Southeast Asia's largest and most influential countries.
Defence Cooperation Takes Centre Stage
Defence cooperation was a major component of Friday's meetings.
Dong Jun received a military honour guard when he arrived at Indonesia's Defence Ministry. He said the two militaries had considerable scope to work together to strengthen their ability to protect national interests and respond to external threats.
Indonesia's defence minister said the two sides would expand military activities, including joint exercises, officer exchanges and cooperation in the defence industry.
The proposed expansion would give the two militaries more opportunities for regular engagement and could deepen Indonesia-China security ties.
Indonesia Maintains Strategic Balance
Jakarta's engagement with Beijing comes as Indonesia seeks to maintain relationships with both China and the United States.
Indonesia has traditionally followed an independent foreign policy and avoided formally aligning itself with either major power. Its economic relationship with China is substantial, while the United States remains an important trade, investment and security partner.
The approach allows Jakarta to cooperate with both sides while preserving room for manoeuvre on regional issues.
South China Sea Adds Complexity
The latest talks are also taking place against the backdrop of tensions in the wider South China Sea and surrounding waters.
China claims extensive maritime territories in the region, while several Southeast Asian nations have competing claims. Indonesia does not consider itself a claimant in the South China Sea dispute, but it has repeatedly faced tensions with Chinese vessels around waters near the Natuna Islands.
For Jakarta, maintaining defence cooperation with China while protecting its maritime interests remains a delicate balancing act.
Naval Exercises Draw Attention
The diplomatic engagement follows a recent joint naval exercise involving China and Indonesia east of Taiwan.
The exercise attracted attention because Taiwan reacted strongly to the drills, given China's claim over the island.
Indonesia's navy said the exercise was part of broader military engagement and noted that its forces also conduct exercises with countries including Japan and the United States.
The explanation reflects Jakarta's effort to avoid allowing military cooperation with one country to be interpreted as an exclusive strategic alignment.
Beijing Courts Southeast Asia
China's latest outreach to Indonesia comes as Beijing seeks stronger relationships across Southeast Asia amid intensifying competition with Washington.
For Indonesia, closer economic and defence engagement with China offers potential benefits in investment, trade and military modernisation. At the same time, Jakarta has incentives to maintain strong relations with the United States and other regional partners.
The challenge for Indonesia will be to expand cooperation with Beijing without compromising its strategic autonomy.
Friday's talks therefore carry significance beyond bilateral relations. They highlight how Southeast Asian countries are attempting to preserve diplomatic flexibility as competition between the world's two largest powers increasingly shapes the region's security and economic environment.
