China Used AI-Generated Images to Undermine Rafale Sales After Op-Sindoor

China allegedly launched a disinformation campaign targeting India’s Rafale jets shortly after the India-Pakistan military conflict in May, according to a report by the US-China Economic and Security Review Commission (USCC). The campaign reportedly involved circulating AI-generated images portraying Indian Rafales as being destroyed by Chinese weaponry, with the apparent aim of promoting China’s J-35 fighter jets and discouraging global Rafale sales.

The USCC’s annual report, released on Tuesday, detailed that Beijing exploited the Op-Sindoor conflict to amplify the capabilities of its own aircraft while casting doubt on the performance of French-made Rafales used by India. The commission also highlighted that the campaign used fake social media accounts to amplify the narrative internationally.

The report flagged five major risks posed by China: rapid advancements in AI, robotics, quantum computing, and other critical technologies; control over key raw materials and supply chains; deepening strategic partnerships with Russia, Iran, and North Korea; security concerns from China-manufactured energy storage systems with remote monitoring capabilities; and overall economic and technological influence that could challenge US interests. The findings are intended to guide Congress in shaping policies to counter China’s strategic moves.

During the same conflict, Pakistan claimed it had shot down five Indian aircraft, including three Rafales. India, however, rejected these claims. Chief of Defence Staff Gen. Anil Chauhan, speaking at the Shangri-La Dialogue in Singapore, stated that focusing on aircraft losses was less important than analyzing operational lessons. He described Pakistan’s claims of six aircraft losses as “absolutely wrong” and added that India responded effectively within two days, correcting errors rapidly.

The US report underscores the growing use of artificial intelligence in disinformation campaigns, marking a new dimension in geopolitical competition, and emphasizes the need for vigilance in safeguarding global defence technology sales and credibility.
