US President Donald Trump deployed 300 National Guard in Chicago, Illinois, on Sunday, in view of rising crime and protests. Following this, clashes broke out between these guard and protesters.
Clashes between protesters and soldiers
In Chicago, clashes also occurred in many places between protesters and National Guard, in which pepper spray and rubber bullets were used. DHS chief Kristi Noem said they are sending special forces.
On Saturday morning in Chicago's Brighton Park area, an armed American woman tried to attack Immigration Department (ICE) vehicles with her car.
According to DHS, after this, agents fired in self-defence, injuring the woman. She reached the hospital herself and was discharged by noon. No agent was seriously injured.
White House spokesperson Abigail Jackson said - Trump wants to prevent unrest in cities. These soldiers will protect our officials and property. Now, more than 1000 protesters have been arrested.
This action is being carried out under Operation Midway Blitz of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS). It was launched in September 2025. Under this, criminals and illegal immigrants are being arrested.
This operation was launched after the death of a girl named Katie Abraham. An illegal immigrant had run over Katie with a speeding car while intoxicated last month.
Illinois Governor JB Pritzker said that Trump threatened me that if I don't send troops, they will send them themselves. This is wrong. Pritzker stated that local police are already handling everything, yet Trump is sending troops.
Pritzker said that they would challenge this decision in court, as it is a violation of the Posse Comitatus Act (which prohibits the use of soldiers in domestic law enforcement). Illinois Attorney General Kwame Raoul has also spoken of filing a lawsuit.
US Federal Court has blocked the deployment of 200 National Guard in Portland, Oregon. The judge stated that Trump's claim that Portland is "war-torn" and experiencing violent protests is not true. These are minor, peaceful protests. Portland police are handling it.
The judge called it a violation of constitutional limits, because the President only gets the authority to take National Guard under federal control without state approval when there is an insurrection or a major threat, which is not the case here.
