Former US National Security Advisor John Bolton has said that the deep friendship between President Donald Trump and India's Prime Minister Narendra Modi is now over. He has warned that good relations with Trump cannot save world leaders from the bad effects of policies.
Former US National Security Advisor John Bolton has made a sensational statement that the deep personal friendship between President Donald Trump and India's Prime Minister Narendra Modi is now over.
Bolton has warned that good relations with Trump cannot save world leaders from the bad effects of their policies. This statement has come at a time when relations between India and America have reached the lowest level in the last two decades. Trump's tariff policy and his administration's constant criticism against India have further weakened this relationship.
Bolton said in an interview to British media portal LBC that Trump sees international relations only through the prism of his personal friendship with leaders.
'Friendship is over now...'
For example, if they have a good friendship with Vladimir Putin, they assume that the US-Russia relations are also good. But the reality is different. The same thing happened with India. Trump and Modi's friendship was strong earlier, but now it is over.
Bolton said that the policies of the Trump administration have pushed India-US relations back decades. Especially, the tariffs imposed against India for buying Russian oil have brought New Delhi closer to Russia and China.
'Trump has made a mistake'
Bolton has called it a big mistake of Trump. He said that America had tried for years to make India move away from its old Russia-leaning attitude and consider China as its biggest security challenge. But Trump's policies have wasted this effort.
He also said that China has taken advantage of the opportunity and presented itself as an alternative to America and Trump.
According to Bolton, this situation can be changed, but right now is a very bad time for India-US relations. Trump's policies have pushed India on a path where it is looking closer to Russia and China.
