Veteran Hollywood filmmaker Rob Reiner and his wife, Michele Reiner, were found dead at their residence in the Brentwood neighbourhood of Los Angeles on Sunday afternoon, police said, triggering a homicide investigation into what authorities believe was a violent attack.
According to preliminary information cited by US media, the couple was discovered after police received a call requesting a welfare check at the home. Investigators found both victims with apparent stab wounds. The Los Angeles Police Department has not released specific details on the nature of the injuries but confirmed that the deaths are being treated as a suspected double homicide.
Rob Reiner was 78, while Michele Reiner was 68. Police officials said there were no immediate signs of forced entry and that detectives are examining surveillance footage, forensic evidence and phone records. Authorities are also seeking to speak with the couple’s son as part of routine investigative procedures, sources told local media.
No arrests have been made so far, and police have not disclosed a possible motive. “This remains an active investigation, and all angles are being examined,” an LAPD spokesperson said, urging the public to avoid speculation.
Reiner was one of Hollywood’s most influential directors, known for a career spanning more than five decades. He directed a string of critically acclaimed and commercially successful films, including This Is Spinal Tap, The Princess Bride, When Harry Met Sally… and A Few Good Men. Before turning to directing, he gained fame as an actor, winning two Emmy Awards for his role as Michael “Meathead” Stivic on the landmark television series All in the Family.
The son of legendary comedian and filmmaker Carl Reiner, Rob Reiner was widely regarded as a storyteller who combined wit with emotional depth. He married Michele Reiner, an actress and photographer, in 1989. The couple had three children.
Tributes from across the film industry began to pour in as news of their deaths spread, with colleagues describing Reiner as a defining voice in American cinema. Police said further updates would be shared as the investigation progresses.
