India Targets Pakistan at UN, Links Political Turmoil to Terrorism and Military Control

India mounted a sharp attack on Pakistan during an open debate at the United Nations Security Council (UNSC), accusing Islamabad of using international platforms to deflect attention from its internal political crisis and continued sponsorship of cross-border terrorism. Speaking at the UNSC, India’s Permanent Representative Ambassador Harish Parvathaneni said Pakistan had “jailed a former prime minister while granting lifetime immunity and sweeping powers to its army chief,” calling the country a hub of terrorism.

Parvathaneni linked Pakistan’s domestic developments to regional instability, referring to the imprisonment of former prime minister Imran Khan, the ban on his political party, and what he described as a “constitutional coup” carried out through the 27th constitutional amendment that strengthened military authority. He said these actions exposed Pakistan’s governance crisis and its reliance on the military to retain control.

Rejecting Pakistan’s repeated references to Jammu and Kashmir, the Indian envoy reiterated that Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh are “an integral and inseparable part of India.” He said Pakistan’s attempts to internationalise the issue reflected a “dangerous mindset” aimed at targeting India rather than addressing its own internal challenges.

India also defended its decision to suspend the Indus Waters Treaty, arguing that the agreement was signed 65 years ago in a spirit of goodwill but was repeatedly violated by Pakistan through wars and sustained terrorist attacks. Parvathaneni said thousands of Indians had lost their lives to terrorism over the past four decades, citing the April 2025 Pahalgam attack in which 26 civilians were killed. He stated that the treaty would remain suspended until Pakistan dismantles its terror infrastructure.

The remarks came amid growing international attention on Pakistan’s internal situation. Imran Khan has been jailed since August 2023 and faces multiple cases, including corruption and anti-terrorism charges linked to the May 2023 unrest. UN Special Envoy Alice Jill Edwards has raised concerns over his treatment in custody.

India also pointed to the recent elevation of Army Chief Asim Munir as both Chief of Defence Forces and Chief of Army Staff, following the 27th amendment, saying the move concentrated unprecedented power in the military and undermined civilian governance in Pakistan.
