A catastrophic road accident on the Kan-Etsu Expressway in Minakami town, Gunma Prefecture, late Friday night has left one person dead and 26 others injured, Japanese authorities reported.
The pileup occurred during heavy snowfall and dense fog, which severely reduced visibility. Police said the chain of events began when two trucks collided, partially blocking the expressway. Vehicles approaching from behind were unable to brake on the icy, snow-covered road, leading to a massive pileup involving more than 50 vehicles. Several cars caught fire following the collisions, spreading flames rapidly across the scene.
A 77-year-old woman was confirmed dead, while five of the injured are in critical condition. Emergency responders, including firefighters, battled the blaze for nearly seven hours before bringing it fully under control. Photographs and videos of the fire and wreckage have circulated widely on social media, highlighting the scale of the disaster.
Authorities noted that the accident coincided with heavy traffic caused by end-of-year and New Year holiday travel. Despite warnings of snowfall issued on Friday, many vehicles were on the expressway at the time of the crash.
Police and emergency teams continue to clear debris, investigate the cause, and conduct road-cleaning operations. A portion of the Kan-Etsu Expressway remains closed, and drivers have been urged to exercise extreme caution due to icy and slippery conditions.

Officials are examining whether excessive speed, driver error, or other factors contributed to the pileup. The incident underscores the dangers of winter driving in Japan, particularly during peak holiday periods when road traffic is heavy and weather conditions are unpredictable.
Authorities have called for stricter compliance with safety advisories and have warned travelers to monitor forecasts and delay non-essential travel until conditions improve. The investigation into the accident is ongoing.
