Nepal Flood Raises Questions Over China BRI Railway Plan

Flash floods destroyed Nepal-China Gyirong border infrastructure, raising concerns over risks facing the proposed Tibet-Kathmandu railway project.
A devastating flash flood near the Nepal-China (Tibet) border has damaged the strategic Gyirong border route, destroying roads, bridges and infrastructure that connect Nepal with China. The destruction has also renewed concerns over the challenges facing the proposed China-Nepal railway project under the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI).
The Gyirong Land Port, located in a fragile Himalayan region at an altitude of around 1,800 metres, was among the key points affected by the disaster. The route serves as an important trade and transport link between Nepal and China.
The flood damage has raised questions about whether large infrastructure projects planned across the Himalayan terrain will require stronger disaster-management measures and climate-resilient designs.
Why the flood matters for the railway plan
China and Nepal have been discussing a railway connection between Tibet and Kathmandu since Nepal joined the Belt and Road Initiative framework in 2016. The proposed railway would pass through some of the world's most challenging mountain landscapes.The planned route would cross the Tibetan Plateau, enter the Himalayan region and require extensive tunnelling through mountain terrain before reaching the Kathmandu Valley.Experts have previously pointed to difficulties including steep slopes, seismic activity, unstable geology and extreme weather conditions in the Himalayas. The recent flood damage has added another concern — the ability of infrastructure networks to withstand increasingly unpredictable weather events.
A challenging Himalayan corridor
The Nepal-China railway project is considered strategically significant because it could improve connectivity between Nepal and China. However, constructing rail infrastructure across the Himalayas involves complex engineering challenges.The region is prone to landslides, earthquakes, flash floods and difficult construction conditions. Maintaining roads and transport links in such terrain has already proven challenging, as shown by the destruction around Gyirong.
What happens next
The flood damage is expected to lead to further assessment of infrastructure vulnerabilities in the border region. Any future progress on the railway project would likely require detailed studies on environmental risks, construction safety and long-term maintenance.The disaster does not automatically mean the railway plan will be abandoned, but it has increased scrutiny over how such a project would be designed and protected against Himalayan hazards.
