Nobel Prize in chemistry: Discovery of chemicals in space or advanced batteries

The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences in Sweden will announce the Nobel Prize in Chemistry today. The announcement will be made around 3:15 PM.

The Chemistry Nobel is awarded every year to scientists who have made discoveries that improve life or the environment.

According to media reports, this year’s award could go for the discovery of chemicals in space (astrochemistry), development of advanced batteries, special types of droplets in cells (biomolecular condensates), or reactions that accelerate chemical processes (catalysis).

The winner will receive 11 million Swedish kronor (₹10.3 crore), a gold medal, and a certificate. If more than one scientist wins, the prize money will be shared among them. The awards will be presented in Stockholm on 10 December.

History of the Nobel Prize

The Nobel Prizes were established in 1895 and were first awarded in 1901. From 1901 to 2024, 229 people have received the prize in the field of medicine.

These prizes are awarded based on the will of scientist and inventor Alfred Bernhard Nobel. Initially, the Nobel Prizes were given only in physics, medicine, chemistry, literature, and peace. Later, a prize in economics was also introduced.

According to the official Nobel Prize website, the names of nominees in any field are kept secret for 50 years.

Nobel Prize 2024 awarded for discovery of new proteins

The 2024 Chemistry Nobel was awarded to three scientists. David Baker designed new proteins using computers, which can help in making medicines and vaccines. Demis Hassabis and John Jumper created a smart AI that can predict the shapes of proteins.

Proteins play a vital role in our bodies, from digesting food to fighting diseases. Baker’s work in creating new proteins opens the way for developing medicines, vaccines, and innovative solutions.

Hassabis and Jumper’s AI program, AlphaFold, can easily determine protein structures, helping scientists develop new drugs faster.

How will the announcement be made?

The Royal Swedish Academy will announce the winners in the session hall of the Nobel Academy in Stockholm. The Academy’s Secretary General will reveal the winners’ names, the reason for their discovery, and its impact during a press conference. It can be watched live on the website nobelprize.org, YouTube, or on social media.
