Pakistan Offers Karachi Port Access to Bangladesh to Boost Regional Trade

In a significant move to strengthen economic ties, Pakistan has formally offered Bangladesh access to its Karachi Port. The proposal was made during the 9th session of the Pakistan-Bangladesh Joint Economic Commission (JEC) held in Dhaka, aiming to create a new regional trade gateway.

Leading the Pakistani delegation, Federal Minister for Commerce Jamil Ahmed stated that the initiative is designed to provide Bangladesh with easier and more efficient access to key markets in China, the Gulf countries, and Central Asia. This offer of a "regional trade gateway" facility would enable Bangladesh to enhance its trade with nations where it currently lacks direct connectivity.

The proposal comes at a time when regional trade dynamics are evolving. By utilizing the Karachi Port, Bangladeshi exports could find more streamlined routes to lucrative markets, potentially reducing transit times and costs. This development is seen as a strategic step to deepen bilateral relations and unlock new economic opportunities for both South Asian nations.

Beyond the port access offer, the two countries agreed on several other measures to bolster cooperation. These include enhancing direct air and sea links, strengthening logistics networks, and standardizing Halal product certifications to facilitate smoother trade of goods.

Further solidifying the partnership, Pakistan announced an increase in scholarships and technical training seats for Bangladeshi entrepreneurs, offering a total of 500 opportunities. To ensure the discussed proposals are effectively implemented, both sides decided to establish a joint working group.

This enhanced cooperation marks a positive step in Pakistan-Bangladesh relations, focusing on mutual economic growth and regional integration. The offer to use Karachi Port could redefine trade routes and open a new chapter of economic partnership between the two countries.
