PM Modi Begins Four-Day Tour of Jordan, Ethiopia and Oman; IMEC Corridor Likely on Agenda

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday embarked on a four-day official visit to Jordan, Ethiopia and Oman, aimed at strengthening India’s political, economic and strategic engagement with key partners across West Asia and Africa. The tour, scheduled from December 15 to 18, begins in Jordan at the invitation of King Abdullah II bin Al Hussein.

In a departure statement issued by the Prime Minister’s Office, Modi said the three countries share “age-old civilisational ties and extensive contemporary bilateral relations” with India. His visit to Jordan coincides with the completion of 75 years of diplomatic relations between the two nations, established in 1950.

Jordan is India’s fourth-largest trading partner in the region. Bilateral trade stood at ₹26,033 crore in 2023–24, with Indian exports accounting for over half the volume. Both sides have set a target of expanding trade to $5 billion in the coming years. India imports rock phosphate and fertiliser raw materials from Jordan, while exporting machinery, petroleum products, grains, chemicals and auto components. Indian investments in Jordan exceed $1.5 billion, primarily in phosphate and textile sectors.

Discussions during the Jordan leg are expected to include the India–Middle East–Europe Economic Corridor (IMEC), a connectivity project announced at the G20 Summit in 2023. The corridor aims to provide a faster and more cost-effective trade route between India and Europe via the Middle East, reducing transit time and logistics costs. With regional tensions easing, momentum around the project has revived.

Modi will travel to Ethiopia on December 16, where talks are expected to focus on development cooperation, trade and India’s engagement with Africa. The final leg of the tour will take him to Oman, a long-standing strategic and energy partner in the Gulf.

The visit underscores India’s push to deepen partnerships across critical regions while advancing trade, connectivity and geopolitical cooperation.
