Trump Confirms Ireland Flight

US President Donald Trump said Friday that he plans to use the new presidential aircraft donated by Qatar during his upcoming trip to Ireland, despite continuing questions over its security configuration.

Trump is expected to travel to Dublin and then visit his family's golf resort in Doonbeg, County Clare, where the Irish Open is being held.

Speaking to reporters at the White House, Trump defended the aircraft and said it would eventually receive additional modifications designed to allow it to operate safely in a wider range of environments.

The comments came weeks after a security scare reportedly forced Trump to abandon the aircraft during his departure from Turkey.

Security Upgrade Delayed

Trump said the aircraft would be sent for additional work in October and that the process would take about 60 days.

The timeline represents a significant extension from his earlier estimate. Trump had previously suggested in July that the additional security modifications could be completed in about a month.

The White House did not provide details about the specific upgrades or explain why the timetable had changed.

A senior administration official told AFP that the government maintains a “safe, secure, and reliable capability” for the president and regularly adjusts it according to operational requirements.

The official also described the aircraft as an exceptionally capable presidential plane.

Turkey Security Scare

The latest controversy follows an incident during Trump's departure from a NATO summit in Ankara, Turkey, in July.

Trump reportedly switched from the new presidential aircraft to an older Air Force One after concerns about a possible Iranian threat. He subsequently used a third aircraft, adding to questions over the security and operational readiness of the Qatari jet.

The episode highlighted the complexities of using a recently acquired aircraft for presidential travel before all planned modifications had been completed.

Trump has nevertheless continued to praise the plane and has insisted that it can ultimately be upgraded to meet the demanding requirements of presidential operations.

Qatar Gifted Boeing 747

Qatar's royal family donated the Boeing 747 aircraft to the United States in 2025 after Trump repeatedly criticised delays surrounding the replacement of the ageing Air Force One fleet.
