Bangladesh police announced Sunday that two prime suspects in the murder of prominent youth leader Sharif Osman Hadi have crossed into India via the Haluaghat border in Mymensingh district, entering Meghalaya state.
Dhaka Metropolitan Police Additional Commissioner SN Nazrul Islam told reporters the fugitives, identified as Faisal Karim Masud and Alamgir Sheikh, received help from local associates. After crossing, an individual named Purti reportedly met them, followed by a taxi driver named Sami who drove them to Tura city.
Islam added that informal reports indicate Indian authorities have detained Purti and Sami. Bangladesh is coordinating through formal and informal channels to secure the suspects' arrest and extradition.
Hadi, 32, a key figure in the 2024 student uprising that toppled Sheikh Hasina and spokesperson for the radical platform Inqilab Mancha, was shot in the head by masked gunmen on a motorcycle in central Dhaka on December 12. He was campaigning as an independent for the February 2026 elections.
Air-lifted to Singapore, Hadi died on December 18, sparking violent nationwide protests, arson attacks on media houses, and heightened anti-India sentiment amid claims the killers sought refuge there.
Police describe the suspects as linked to the banned Awami League. The case has strained bilateral ties, with Dhaka previously seeking India's cooperation to prevent border escapes.
Investigators continue the manhunt, offering rewards for tips. Hadi's killing has fueled unrest ahead of polls, raising fears of further instability in the interim government era.
