Cole Thomas Allen, a 31-year-old man from Torrance, California, has been identified as the suspect in the shooting incident that disrupted the White House Correspondents’ Dinner in Washington, DC, attended by US President Donald Trump. According to US federal officials, Allen was taken into custody after allegedly breaching a security checkpoint and opening fire near the Washington Hilton hotel on Saturday night.

The incident triggered a swift security response, forcing Secret Service personnel to evacuate Trump, First Lady Melania Trump and several senior officials from the venue. One federal officer was injured in the exchange, but officials said the officer survived because the bullet struck a protective vest.

Educational Background

Public records and media reports show that Allen had a strong academic profile. He studied mechanical engineering at the undergraduate level and later completed a master’s degree in computer science. Reports also suggest he had worked on technical and software projects, including game development and tutoring.

Investigators reviewing his background found that Allen had also worked in education. He was reportedly employed with C2 Education, a US-based tutoring company, where he had spent several years helping students with test preparation and college admissions. Reports indicate he was recognised internally as a top-performing instructor in 2024.

Authorities said Allen was able to reach the outer security zone because he was a registered guest at the Washington Hilton, where the annual White House Correspondents’ Association Dinner was being held. Officials said he moved past the screening area and charged toward a secured section before shots were fired.
