Feb 21, 2026: Ditch the sugary drinks! Nutritionists are reviving traditional Indian winter warmers. Learn how to make Mulethi tea and Methi water to combat congestion, boost immunity, and stay hydrated despite the dip in thirst.
As North India continues to grapple with low temperatures and poor air quality, health experts are turning to the wisdom of grandma's kitchen for solutions beyond the ubiquitous turmeric latte.
On Saturday, clinical nutritionist Rashmeet Kaur Gupta shared a list of traditional beverages specifically designed to tackle winter ailments like congestion, dry throat, and sluggish digestion .
The first on her list is Fenugreek (Methi) Seed Water. Soaking a teaspoon of methi seeds overnight and consuming the water (and seeds) in the morning helps thin excess mucus and supports respiratory comfort. It’s a simple hack for those waking up with a heavy chest.
Next is Licorice (Mulethi) Tea. As a natural demulcent, mulethi soothes the throat lining and reduces irritation caused by dry, cold air and pollution. "Glycyrrhizin, an active compound in liquorice, has significant anti-inflammatory effects," Gupta notes, recommending a warm cup for anyone with a persistent tickly cough .
Finally, the Amla-Turmeric Shot is being hailed as a powerhouse morning tonic. Combining the high Vitamin C content of the Indian gooseberry with the anti-inflammatory properties of turmeric (enhanced with black pepper) supports liver function and provides a shield against seasonal allergies. Unlike sugary juices, these drinks maintain hydration levels, which often drop in winter because we feel less thirsty. "Staying hydrated isn't just about water," says Gupta. "It's about nutrient-dense fluids that serve a purpose."
