Tesla to Open First Indian Showroom in Mumbai on July 15

Electric vehicle giant Tesla is officially stepping into the Indian market, with its first showroom set to open in Mumbai on July 15, followed by another in New Delhi later this month. This marks a significant milestone in the company’s long-awaited entry into India, one of the world's fastest-growing automobile markets.

The Mumbai showroom will be located in the upscale Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC), occupying a 4,000-square-foot space near Apple’s flagship store. Designed as an “experience centre,” the showroom will allow customers to explore Tesla’s models, learn about pricing and variants, and configure their vehicles before making a purchase. According to reports, the first week of operations will be limited to VIPs and business partners, with access for the general public beginning the following week.

Tesla’s entry is part of a broader expansion strategy in India. The company recently leased a 24,500-square-foot facility in Kurla West, Mumbai, to serve as a dedicated service centre for maintenance and support, located conveniently close to the upcoming showroom.

The showroom launch will coincide with the introduction of Tesla’s Model Y rear-wheel drive SUV, which has already been imported into India from the company’s Shanghai Gigafactory. Deliveries of the vehicle are expected to begin in August 2025, with customers able to place orders as early as mid-July. The Model Y, Tesla’s top-selling car globally, is anticipated to be the flagship model for the Indian market.

While Tesla is not currently planning local manufacturing, the company’s decision to enter India comes amid high import duties. Under the 2025 Union Budget, customs duties on completely built units (CBUs) were increased from 60% to 70% for imported cars priced above $40,000. This move is intended to encourage domestic manufacturing and could pose a challenge for Tesla’s pricing strategy.

The upcoming New Delhi showroom, expected to open in late July, mirrors Apple’s retail rollout in India — starting in Mumbai’s BKC, followed by a second store in Delhi’s Saket area. While the exact location of the Tesla showroom in Delhi has not been confirmed, industry observers expect it to be situated in a similarly high-profile district.

Tesla’s entry into India signals a growing interest in electric mobility and sets the stage for greater competition in the premium EV segment.
