Lawyers Required to Argue Cases Within Set Time Limits as SC Cracks Down on Delays

No More ‘Date After Date’ for Justice: Supreme Court Can Now Impose Deadlines

In a major move to curb judicial delays, the Supreme Court has ruled that it can now impose strict time limits on lawyers to complete their arguments. This decision aims to eliminate the culture of prolonged adjournments, ensuring faster and more efficient delivery of justice.

Everyone will remember a dialogue from Bollywood actor Sunny Deol's hit film Damini, 'Tarikh par Tarikh'... This dialogue was used in the film because of the delay in getting justice from the courts of India. But now it is going to change. Actually, the hearing of cases in the Supreme Court can be faster than before, so that people will not have to wait long for justice. The apex court has asked the lawyers to tell in advance how much time they will take to complete their arguments in a case. This was said by the bench headed by Justice Suryakant.

Justice Suryakant also made it clear that this would be just an advice. This will enable the hearing of the cases to be completed on time. He said that this advice will be issued when the court opens after the summer holidays. Let us tell you that Justice Kant is going to become the next Chief Justice (CJI) after Justice BR Gavai.

This came to light when the court was hearing petitions challenging the validity of the Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) and Election Commissioners (EC) Act, 2023. Through this Act, the CJI has been removed from the committee appointing the EC. Advocate Prashant Bhushan, appearing for the petitioner, sought an early hearing of the case. He said that this case is similar to two earlier Supreme Court decisions. Justice Kant said that the bench wants to start hearing the case and wants it to be over before the process of further appointment in the EC starts.
