Adani Defence Signs 5-Year Ammunition Pact for AK-203 Rifles

The agreement with Indo-Russian Rifles links India-made AK-203 rifles with locally manufactured 7.62x39 mm ammunition, strengthening the domestic small-arms supply chain.

Five-Year Supply Agreement

Adani Defence & Aerospace has signed a five-year agreement with Indo-Russian Rifles Private Limited (IRRPL) to supply indigenously manufactured 7.62x39 mm ammunition for AK-203 assault rifles being produced in India.

The agreement brings together two key elements of the India-Russia AK-203 programme — rifle production by IRRPL and ammunition manufacturing by Adani Defence.

Under the pact, Adani Defence will supply the ammunition required for the AK-203 programme throughout the five-year contract period, providing an Indian source for a critical consumable used by the rifle.

AK-203 Programme Expands

The agreement adds another layer of localisation to the AK-203 programme, which was established to manufacture the Russian-designed assault rifle in India.

IRRPL was incorporated in 2019 under an India-Russia intergovernmental agreement for domestic production of AK-203 rifles for the Indian Armed Forces. Its manufacturing facility is located at Korwa in Uttar Pradesh's Amethi district.

The latest ammunition deal means that the rifle and a key part of its ammunition supply chain can now be supported through manufacturing facilities located in India.

6.01 Lakh Rifles Planned

The Ministry of Defence signed a contract with IRRPL in December 2021 for the manufacture of 6,01,427 AK-203 rifles for the Indian Armed Forces.

The rifles are being produced at the Korwa facility. The joint venture includes Indian companies Advanced Weapons and Equipment India Ltd and Munitions India Ltd, along with Russian entities Concern Kalashnikov and Rosoboronexport.

The AK-203 uses the 7.62x39 mm cartridge, making a reliable domestic ammunition supply important for the wider production and deployment programme.

Adani Enters Supply Chain

Adani Defence has been expanding its presence in India's defence manufacturing sector, including the production of small-calibre ammunition.

The company has established a small-calibre ammunition manufacturing facility in Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh. The new agreement gives that manufacturing capability a direct role in supporting the AK-203 programme.

The arrangement also represents a deeper role for the private sector in an Indian defence programme involving an India-Russia joint venture.

Push For Defence Self-Reliance

The agreement comes as the government continues to push for greater domestic production of defence equipment and ammunition under the Aatmanirbhar Bharat initiative.

The aim is not only to manufacture major platforms and weapons within India but also to develop local supply chains for components, ammunition and other critical requirements.

By connecting domestically produced AK-203 rifles with Indian-made ammunition, the latest agreement strengthens that supply-chain approach and could reduce dependence on overseas sources for the rifle's ammunition requirements.

India-Russia Defence Link

The AK-203 programme remains an important example of India's defence manufacturing partnership with Russia.

While the rifle is based on the Kalashnikov design, its production in India involves an Indian-Russian joint venture and a growing domestic industrial ecosystem.

The new ammunition arrangement shows how the programme is moving beyond rifle assembly and production towards a broader India-based manufacturing chain.

The five-year supply agreement is expected to support continuity of ammunition availability for the AK-203 programme while expanding India's domestic small-arms manufacturing base.
