Digital desk
Tension rises between Assam and Meghalaya after Assam residents were allegedly assaulted during a KSU rally in Shillong. Vehicles were damaged and a police outpost was attacked.
Tension has escalated between Assam and Meghalaya following violence during a Khasi Students Union (KSU) rally in Shillong, where residents from Assam were allegedly assaulted and several vehicles were damaged.
The situation has since spread to multiple parts of Meghalaya, with reports of arson and petrol bomb attacks targeting public property. Assam has also restricted movement along parts of its border with Meghalaya amid growing concerns over the security situation.
Assam Residents Attacked
The dispute began on Wednesday when people from Assam were allegedly assaulted during a KSU rally in Shillong. Several vehicles were also set on fire during the violence.
According to the information available, 31 vehicles were damaged, with most of them carrying Assam registration numbers.
The incidents triggered concern among residents and led to sporadic reports of violence in other districts of Meghalaya. People from Assam were reportedly among those affected in several of these incidents.
Guwahati Sees Road Blockade
The developments also triggered a reaction in neighbouring Assam.
Taxi drivers in Guwahati staged a protest and blocked traffic on National Highway-27, disrupting movement on the important route.
The situation has raised concerns about the potential impact on movement between the two northeastern states, which share a long and frequently disputed boundary.
Petrol Bomb Thrown At Police Outpost
Shillong remained largely peaceful during Thursday before a fresh incident was reported late in the evening.
At around 9:30 pm, unidentified people allegedly threw a petrol bomb into the premises of the Nongmensong police outpost.
The device reportedly landed inside the compound and set a chair on fire. CRPF personnel were present on the upper floor of the building when the incident took place.
The fire was brought under control before it could spread further, preventing greater damage.
Police said a case would be registered in connection with the attack. Investigators are also expected to examine CCTV footage from the area to identify those involved.
Violence Raises Security Concerns
The latest incidents have increased security concerns in Shillong and other parts of Meghalaya.
Authorities are monitoring areas where clashes or retaliatory incidents have been reported. The reported targeting of vehicles belonging to people from Assam has added another dimension to the dispute.
Officials are also likely to focus on preventing further escalation along the Assam-Meghalaya border and protecting commuters and property.
Long-Standing Border Dispute
The latest tension comes against the backdrop of a long-standing boundary dispute between Assam and Meghalaya.
Both states have been working to resolve disputed areas through negotiations, but disagreements over certain stretches of their boundary have periodically triggered tensions.
The latest violence, however, began with the alleged assault of Assam residents during the KSU rally and subsequent attacks on vehicles and property.
With incidents now being reported beyond the original location, maintaining peace and preventing retaliatory violence remains a key challenge for authorities in both states.
