Bharat Bandh Announced: 25 Crore Workers to Join Nationwide Strike

A massive Bharat Bandh has been declared with 25 crore employees set to participate in a nationwide strike. The protest could disrupt essential services across the country. Here's what triggered the shutdown and what to expect.

The widespread impact of Bharat Bandh can be seen across the country on 9 July 2025 (Wednesday). In which an estimated more than 25 crore employees will join from various sectors like banking, insurance and postal services. This strike is being organized by 10 central trade unions and has been named Bharat Bandh. Its objective is to protest against the anti-labor, farmer and anti-national policies of the government, which give priority to corporate interests. Amarjit Kaur of All India Trade Union Congress said that farmers and rural employees will also participate in this strike. Harbhajan Singh Sidhu of Hind Mazdoor Sabha said that banking, postal, coal mining, factories and state transport services will be affected due to this strike.

The organizations calling for Bharat Bandh had presented a charter of 17-point demands to Labor Minister Mansukh Mandaviya last year. They allege that the government has not been organizing the annual labor conference for the last one decade, due to which decisions are being taken against the interests of workers and employees. The labor organizations also said that unemployment is increasing due to economic policies, prices of essential commodities are skyrocketing, wages are decreasing, and social sector expenditure is being cut for education, health and basic civic amenities. All these problems are affecting the poor, low-income group people and the middle class, making the situation of inequality and deprivation even more severe.

Alleged this

The forum also said that the policy of hiring retired persons instead of regular appointments to the youth in government departments will not help in the development of the country, because 65 percent of the population is below 35 years of age. Apart from this, the biggest impact of unemployment is on the age group of 20 to 25 years. The statement demanded the government to focus on unemployment, recruit on sanctioned posts, create more jobs, increase the working days and wages of MNREGA workers, and make similar laws for urban areas. However, the government is currently busy implementing the ELI (Employment Linked Incentive) scheme to encourage employers.

These will also be involved in the strike

Labor leaders of other non-coal minerals, steel, state government departments and public sector enterprises including NMDC Limited have decided to participate in the strike. Labor leaders said that the United Kisan Morcha and agricultural labor organizations have also supported this strike and have decided to mobilize on a large scale in rural India. Earlier, labor organizations had organized similar national strikes on 26 November 2020, 28-29 March 2022 and 16 February last year.
