Cold Wave Sweeps North and Central India as Mercury Dips Sharply Across States

A sharp drop in temperatures driven by icy northern winds has intensified winter conditions across several states, with Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh placed under a two-day cold wave alert. Large parts of Rajasthan, Himachal Pradesh, Punjab, and Chhattisgarh reported minimum temperatures below 10°C on Thursday, while higher Himalayan regions plunged far deeper.

In Uttarakhand, Badrinath registered a severe minus 16°C, freezing waterfalls and lakes. Himachal Pradesh also witnessed an intense chill, with Tabo touching –7.4°C, Keylong –3.3°C, Kukumseri –3.1°C, and Kalpa –0.4°C.

The cold surge has been visible in the plains as well. Indore is experiencing its coldest November in 25 years, and night temperatures in Bhopal have stayed below 9°C for a week. The impact is pronounced across Gwalior, Chambal, Ujjain, Sagar, Indore, and Bhopal divisions. In Dindori, authorities have shifted school timings to 8:30 a.m. due to freezing mornings.

Rajasthan, too, is bracing for a sharper dip. Sirohi recorded the state’s coldest day with maximum temperatures falling below 24°C, while Shekhawati continued to report minimums under 10°C. The Meteorological Department has forecast a further fall in temperatures over the next four days.

Gujarat recorded its coldest day of the season in Dahod, where the minimum settled at 11°C. According to Dr. A.K. Das, Director of the Meteorological Department, temperatures across the state are expected to remain steady for a week. Northeasterly winds have cooled eastern Gujarat, while increased humidity has kept temperatures relatively stable in the west.

In Delhi, authorities deployed water sprayers along Shanti Path to tackle pollution as cold air traps particulate matter. Meanwhile, tourists flocked to Rohtang Pass in Manali to witness fresh snowfall.

Meteorologists expect the cold wave to persist as northern winds continue to sweep across the region, marking an early and sharper onset of winter this season.
