n a strongly worded press conference at Andhra Pradesh Bhavan, Dr. K.A. Paul voiced deep concern over the Supreme Court’s delay in hearing his petition (Item No. 12), attributing it to the absence of the bench led by Justice Surya Kant due to the holiday today. Paul’s legal plea seeks urgent intervention against several actors and celebrities—including Sachin Tendulkar, Rana Daggubati, Vijay Deverakonda, and others—accusing them of accepting hefty payments to endorse illegal betting and gaming apps.
Highlighting the gravity of the issue, Dr. Paul asserted that these platforms have led to massive financial losses, mental distress, and even suicides among vulnerable Indian youth. “Millions of families are suffering as a result of these illegal betting apps. No celebrity or company should escape accountability,” he declared.
Paul recalled appearing before the Supreme Court on May 23 and August 1, 2025, after which the Court had issued notices and interim directions. Yet, he criticized both the Union Government and most State Governments for failing to file their respective responses, lamenting what he described as “serious administrative apathy”.
The petition urges the Supreme Court to:
-
Prosecute individuals and organizations promoting illegal betting platforms.
-
Establish a compensation fund for victims and their families.
-
Hold those responsible for lives lost due to these unlawful activities fully accountable.
Renewed Push for Electoral Reform
Turning to the ongoing Bihar elections, Dr. Paul renewed his call for nationwide electoral reforms. He demanded the immediate ban of Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) and a return to traditional ballot papers, arguing that “Every major democracy relies on ballot papers for transparency and public trust. India must follow suit to preserve the integrity of its polls”.
Appealing directly to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the Election Commission of India, Dr. Paul urged swift action to restore voter confidence. “If not now, when? If not you, who? The people deserve elections they can trust,” he insisted.
Dr. Paul branded the continued use of EVMs in Bihar as a direct threat to India’s democratic foundations, imploring all political parties to join the fight for meaningful electoral reforms and the revival of true democracy.
