Centre Organises Special Kolkata Event to Mark Dr Syama Prasad Mookerjee's 125th Birth Anniversary

The Ministry of Culture will hold a special programme in Kolkata to commemorate Dr Syama Prasad Mookerjee's 125th birth anniversary, with Amit Shah attending as chief guest.

The Ministry of Culture, in collaboration with the Government of West Bengal, will organise a special commemorative programme in Kolkata on Monday to mark the 125th birth anniversary of Bharat Kesari Dr Syama Prasad Mookerjee, launching a series of events as part of the Centre's two-year nationwide celebration dedicated to the eminent nationalist leader.

Union Home and Cooperation Minister Amit Shah will attend the event as the chief guest. The programme will also be attended by Union Culture and Tourism Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat, senior state leaders, government officials and other dignitaries.

The day's events will begin with Amit Shah paying floral tributes at Dr Mookerjee's ancestral residence in Bhowanipore, Kolkata. He will later visit Eco Park, where he will perform the ground-breaking and foundation stone laying ceremony for a proposed 125-foot statue of Dr Mookerjee, envisioned as a tribute to his enduring contribution to the nation.

A major attraction of the event will be a special exhibition showcasing Dr Mookerjee's life and legacy. Featuring rare photographs, archival documents and multimedia presentations, the exhibition will highlight his role as a statesman, educationist, parliamentarian and nationalist leader, while tracing his contributions to India's political, educational, cultural and industrial development.

The commemorative programme at Milan Mela Grounds will begin with a collective rendition of Vande Mataram, followed by a grand musical tribute titled "Sur, Sanskriti Evam Rashtra", presented by the Centre for Cultural Resources and Training (CCRT).

The performance will feature 57 accomplished artists representing Indian classical, folk and traditional music traditions. Directed by Padma Shri Tarun Bhattacharya, the musical presentation aims to celebrate India's rich cultural heritage while reflecting Dr Mookerjee's ideals of cultural nationalism, national integration, education and civilisational values.

The Ministry of Culture will also screen a short documentary on Dr Mookerjee's life and achievements. In addition, a special video highlighting the proposed 125-foot memorial statue will be released during the programme.

The Union Government had announced the two-year nationwide celebration in 2025 to commemorate the 125th birth anniversary of Dr Syama Prasad Mookerjee. The initiative seeks to honour his lasting legacy and inspire future generations through his contributions to nation-building, public service and national unity.

Officials said the commemorative programme reflects the Government of India's commitment to preserving and promoting the legacy of one of the country's prominent nation-builders, whose vision continues to influence India's democratic and developmental journey.
