Police stopped Left-affiliated students from Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) who were marching towards the Vasant Kunj North police station at the JNU West Gate on Saturday evening.
During the incident, there was pushing and shoving between the students and the police. The police detained 28 students, including 19 men and 9 women. JNU Students’ Union president Nitesh Kumar, vice president Manisha, and general secretary Muntiya Fatima were also among those detained.
According to the police, a clash had broken out between Left and Right-wing students on campus during Dussehra. The police had spoken with leaders of the student organisations and assured legal action, but the students went ahead with their planned protest.
Left alleges police protects ABVP
Left-leaning organisations allege that the police protect ABVP (right-wing) students and do not take action against them.
The organisations say that action was promised, but nothing has happened so far.
Protest held without permission
According to the police, around 6 PM, 70–80 students gathered at the West Gate without permission and began a sit-in protest.
The police had already set up barricades to prevent the protesting students from advancing onto Nelson Mandela Road.
However, the students tried to break them. In this clash, six police officers were injured, including four men and two women, and were sent for first aid.
Police say students engaged in scuffle
The students claimed that on Dussehra, the police took sides in the fight, even though ABVP students had initiated the violence. The police said that some students also used abusive language during the scuffle.
Action was taken to control the students in custody to prevent a major incident.
The university administration has appealed to students to remain calm and follow the rules.
