The Election Commission has announced by-elections for 8 assembly seats in 7 states. Votes will be cast on these seats on November 11, and results will be declared on November 14.
The Elections are to be held for-
1. Budgam and Nagrota in Jammu and Kashmir
2. Anta in Rajasthan
3. Ghatsila (ST) in Jharkhand
4. Jubilee Hills in Telangana
5. Tarn Taran in Punjab
6. Dampa in Mizoram
7. Nuapada in Odisha
Two assembly seats in Jammu and Kashmir, Budgam and Nagrota, have been vacant since October 2024. The Budgam seat became vacant immediately after the 2024 assembly elections when Chief Minister Omar Abdullah decided to retain the Ganderbal seat. This seat has been vacant since October 21, 2024.
On the other hand, the Nagrota seat became vacant on October 31, 2024, after the demise of MLA Devendra Singh Rana.
Punjab's Tarn Taran assembly seat became vacant after the demise of AAP MLA Kashmir Singh Sohal. For the Tarn Taran by-election in Punjab, 4 major parties Congress, AAP, Akali Dal, and BJP have fielded their candidates. Among these, AAP has once again given an opportunity to a defector. CM Bhagwant Mann announced Harmeet Sandhu as the candidate last Friday.
He left Akali Dal and joined AAP. Congress has fielded Karanbir Singh Burj from here. Burj has been the Vice President of the Congress Kisan Cell and is a senior Congress leader in the district.
BJP has nominated Harjit Singh Sandhu, a former Akali and Youth Akali leader, as its candidate. Shiromani Akali Dal has fielded Principal Sukhwinder Kaur Randhawa as its candidate in the Tarn Taran by-election. She is known as a prominent leader of the "Azad Group".
The Ghatsila seat in Jharkhand fell vacant due to the demise of MLA and former Education Minister Ramdas Soren.
Ghatshila assembly seat falls in East Singhbhum district and is reserved for Scheduled Tribes (ST). There are a total of 2,49,212 voters here, including 1,22,564 men, 1,26,649 women, and 2 third gender individuals. However, the final list of voters is yet to be released.
Regarding the Ghatshila by-election, no party has announced its candidate yet. Somesh Soren, son of former education minister Ramdas Soren, is considered certain to contest the election as a JMM candidate.
Now, all eyes are on BJP. Will BJP once again field Babulal Soren, son of former CM Champai Soren, in the Ghatshila by-election, which is being fought on a wave of sympathy, or will it give a chance to someone else?
The Jubilee Hill seat in Telangana became vacant after the demise of BRS MLA Maganti Gopinath in June this year.
Mizoram's Dampa assembly seat had become vacant on July 21 after the demise of MNF MLA Lalrintluanga Sailo. The Nuapada assembly seat in Odisha has become vacant on September 8 after the demise of MLA Rajendra Dholakia.
Meena's MLA-ship lost
By-election will be held for the Anta assembly seat in Baran district of Rajasthan. This seat became vacant after Kanwarlal Meena lost his MLA-ship.
Kanwarlal Meena's legislative membership was terminated in May after he was convicted in a 20-year-old case of pointing a pistol at an SDM. In the 2023 assembly elections, Vasundhara Raje supporter Kanwarlal Meena had defeated Pramod Jain Bhaya, who was a minister in the Congress government.
