EC May Extend SIR Deadline for Key States as Voter Verification Closes Today

With the voter verification deadline for the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) exercise ending today across 11 states and Union Territories, the Election Commission (EC) is likely to extend the timeline for some states, including Uttar Pradesh and West Bengal. Senior officials will review the progress of form submission and digitisation in a meeting scheduled on Thursday.
Except Kerala whose deadline has already been extended to December 18—the SIR process concludes today. According to EC sources, inadequate progress in certain regions may prompt another extension to ensure no eligible voter is left out of the rolls. The Commission had earlier extended the deadline by seven days on November 30.
Under the revised schedule issued last month, the final electoral roll will be published on February 14, 2026. The first draft list, earlier due on December 9, will now be released on December 16. The enumeration window for adding, deleting, or correcting voter details has already been pushed from December 4 to December 11.
As part of the ongoing revision, booth level agents of political parties will receive lists of deceased, shifted, or untraceable voters before the draft rolls are published. Chief Electoral Officers were asked to prepare these lists after Booth Level Officers (BLOs) failed to contact such voters despite multiple visits.
The SIR exercise, conducted across 12 states and UTs, covers nearly 51 crore voters. Over 5.33 lakh BLOs and more than 7 lakh booth agents have been deployed. The EC has reiterated that the campaign is aimed at removing duplicates, eliminating names of deceased or migrated individuals, and enrolling new voters above 18.
The Commission has also clarified that Aadhaar may be used as an identity document but cannot serve as proof of citizenship. Voters whose names are missing from the rolls will have a month after the draft list is released to file appeals with district or state election authorities.
