Encounter Continues Between DRG Jawans and Naxalites in Sukma Forest

An encounter between District Reserve Guard (DRG) personnel and Naxalites is ongoing in the Golapalli forest area of Sukma district in Chhattisgarh, with initial inputs suggesting that two to three Maoists may have been killed. Several others are believed to have sustained injuries, though official confirmation is awaited as the operation continues.

According to police sources, the action was launched following specific intelligence about the presence of a sizeable Naxalite group in the Golapalli area. Acting on the inputs, DRG teams initiated a search operation early Wednesday. As the security personnel advanced into the dense forest, they reportedly came under fire from Maoists, triggering a sustained exchange of gunfire.

Heavy firing has been continuing since morning, with security forces holding their positions and responding cautiously due to the difficult terrain and limited visibility. Sources indicated that the Naxalites involved could include senior cadre members, possibly Area Committee Members, some of whom carry cash rewards of up to ₹5 lakh.

Senior police officers are closely monitoring the situation, while additional forces have been kept on standby to provide support if required. A detailed assessment of casualties and recoveries will be possible only after the firing subsides and the search operation is completed.

The latest encounter comes amid intensified anti-Naxal operations in the Bastar region. Earlier this month, on December 3, security forces killed 12 Naxalites in a major operation along the Dantewada–Bijapur border. That encounter also claimed the lives of three DRG jawans, while two others were injured. Among those killed was Divisional Committee Member Vella Modiyam, a senior Maoist leader.

In another operation on November 16, three Naxalites were killed during an exchange of fire in the Bhajji–Chintagufa border area, following intelligence-based action by DRG teams.

Security agencies have maintained heightened vigilance across Sukma and adjoining districts, stating that further details on the ongoing operation will be shared once the situation stabilises.
