The glow of Diwali lit up 10 Downing Street this week as communities from across the UK gathered to celebrate the Festival of Lights.
The annual Diwali reception at the Prime Minister’s official residence honoured the significant contributions of the British Indian community to the nation’s cultural and social landscape.
With Prime Minister Keir Starmer attending the Gaza peace summit in Egypt, Communities Secretary Steve Reed took centre stage, lighting the ceremonial lamp and inaugurating the festive evening. The venue was adorned with traditional diyas, marigold decorations, and an atmosphere of devotion and togetherness.
Among the distinguished guests was Hanuman Dass, founder of the humanitarian organisation Go Dharmic, whose guiding principle is “love all, feed all, serve all.” The highlight of the evening was a heartfelt recitation of the Hanuman Chalisa, led by devotees from Chinmaya Mission.
Hanuman Dass described the moment as profoundly moving, saying, “Reciting the Hanuman Chalisa at 10 Downing Street during Diwali was an experience of deep joy. The hymn embodies devotion, service, and courage—values that Diwali itself celebrates.”
Dedicated to Lord Hanuman, the Hanuman Chalisa is a sacred hymn symbolising strength, humility, and unwavering faith. These values closely align with Go Dharmic’s global initiatives, which focus on addressing hunger, education, environmental sustainability, and compassionate action.
Since its inception, Go Dharmic has served over 27 million meals, planted thousands of trees, and supported educational initiatives in underprivileged communities across India, the UK, and beyond. Their work continues to exemplify the true essence of seva, or selfless service.
“Diwali reminds us that light triumphs over darkness,” added Hanuman Dass. “Our mission at Go Dharmic is inspired by this principle—to illuminate lives with kindness, compassion, and collective effort.”
The celebration at 10 Downing Street reflected the spirit of cultural pride, unity, and selfless service, serving as a reminder of the enduring power of faith and humanitarian action in creating a brighter future for all.
