'Modi govt commits violence against minorities’: New York mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani’s remark sparks controversy
New York’s Democratic mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani has sparked a major controversy with his remarks against Prime Minister Narendra Modi during a speech at a gurdwara on Friday.
Mamdani’s criticism of Modi and Eric Adams
In his address, Mamdani alleged that PM Modi and the Indian government follow “a policy of violence against minorities.”
He also took aim at New York City’s current mayor, Eric Adams, accusing him of making the city “extremely expensive” and of being “too closely aligned with Modi and his administration.”
Earlier, Mamdani had visited a mosque as part of his campaign and was photographed with Imam Siraj Wahhaj, a controversial Brooklyn cleric accused of links to the 1993 World Trade Center bombing plot.
Priyanka Chaturvedi responds sharply
Reacting to the remarks, Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Priyanka Chaturvedi condemned Mamdani’s comments as “deeply disturbing.”
She said, “Who New York elects as mayor is their choice, but what Zohran said in the gurdwara is highly concerning.”
Taking a jibe, she added, “Who’s writing Mamdani’s script—Gurpatwant Singh Pannun?” referring to the separatist leader known for anti-India rhetoric.
Trump’s earlier allegations against Mamdani
Former US President Donald Trump had previously accused Mamdani of having ties with Islamic extremists after his photos with Imam Wahhaj went viral.
Calling the association “an outrage,” Trump said, “It’s disgraceful that a man like Wahhaj supports Mamdani—he was involved in blowing up the World Trade Center.”
Who is Zohran Mamdani?
Mamdani, the son of Indian-American filmmaker Mira Nair, was born in Uganda and raised in the United States. He became a US citizen in 2018 and began his political career campaigning for Democratic candidates in Queens and Brooklyn.
He was elected to the New York State Assembly in 2020 from Astoria, Queens, representing nearby areas as well. A Democratic Socialist, Mamdani has gained attention for his progressive policies — such as a pilot project offering free city bus rides and a proposal to bar non-profits from funding Israeli settlements.
Mamdani leads NYC mayoral race with strong odds
According to Polymarket, Mamdani currently has a 96% chance of winning the upcoming New York City mayoral election, far ahead of his rival Andrew Cuomo, who stands at 4%.
His campaign has drawn strong support from youth, working-class, and minority voters, with promises to lower rents, make public transport free, support small businesses, and increase taxes on the wealthy.
Prominent progressive leaders, including Bernie Sanders, have endorsed his candidacy, further boosting his national profile.
