Home Ministry Revokes Security for 19 Former Union Ministers
The Home Ministry has withdrawn security cover for 19 former Union ministers while retaining the security of a former woman minister. This decision follows a periodic security review based on threat perception.
New Delhi. The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has directed the Delhi Police to withdraw security from 19 former Ministers of State (MoS) who are receiving it despite the end of their tenure. However, the Center has also directed that the security of BJP leader and former Union Minister Smriti Irani be extended for six months.
The Delhi Police had approached the Home Ministry with a list of former state ministers and MPs who are still getting security cover even after the completion of their term/tenure. This was done after an audit conducted by the security unit of Delhi Police last year.
The official said, "The audit revealed that many senior politicians were availing security cover even after their tenure ended. In many cases, security review had not been done for a long time." Following the audit, security cover was withdrawn for several individuals. However, the review found that many former ministers of state were getting security despite no longer holding office.
The official said that the list of such people has been sent to the Home Ministry. Those whose names are in the communication and have been given Y category security include former Minister of State in the Ministry of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises Bhanu Pratap Singh Verma, former Panchayati Raj Minister Birendra Singh, former Minister of State in the Ministry of Communications Devusingh Jesingbhai Chauhan, former Minister of State for Tribal Affairs Jaswantsingh Sumanbhai Bhabhor and former Minister of State for External Affairs Rajkumar Ranjan Singh.
The official said that apart from the state ministers, the Home Ministry's list also includes the names of some Members of Parliament and senior judges. However, the security given to some judges has been retained.
Under the existing rules, the security given on the basis of position or threat is reviewed on completion of a person's tenure. The official said, "It was found that these reviews had not been done for a long time. After completing the assessment, the Delhi Police sent its recommendations to the Home Ministry in December last year. The final decision from the Home Ministry came a few weeks ago." The official further said that as per rules, three personal security officers (PSOs) and four policemen are still deployed at the residences of former ministers of state. "The names of former Army Chief Gen V.K. Singh and Minister of State Ajay Bhatt were also sent to the Home Ministry, but their security has been retained. Besides, the Home Ministry has extended Smriti Irani's security for another six months," the official said.
The level of security to be given to any individual is decided by the Home Ministry based on inputs received from intelligence agencies, such as the Intelligence Bureau (IB) and Research and Analysis Wing (R&AW). Some individuals are entitled to security cover based on their positions in the government.
