Hyderabad Woman Dies by Suicide After U.S. Visa Rejection; Doctor Found Dead in Her Flat

A 38-year-old doctor from Andhra Pradesh died by suicide in Hyderabad after repeated rejections of her U.S. visa application, police said on Friday. The woman, identified as Dr. Rohini of Guntur, was found dead inside her flat in Padma Nagar on the morning of November 22.

According to Chilkalguda police, the incident likely occurred late on November 21. Officers recovered a suicide note from the apartment in which Rohini wrote that she had been under severe stress due to her visa being denied again. Police suspect she consumed an overdose of sleeping pills or injected herself with a substance. The cause of death will be confirmed once the post-mortem report is released.

The incident came to light when the doctor’s domestic help arrived for work and repeatedly knocked on the door. After several unanswered calls, the maid alerted Rohini’s family. A relative living nearby forced open the door and discovered the body lying inside the flat.

Rohini, who completed her MBBS in Kyrgyzstan between 2005 and 2010, had moved to Hyderabad to pursue opportunities that would support her preparations for higher medical studies abroad. Her family said she had been working toward securing a visa to the U.S., where she hoped to specialize in internal medicine.

Her mother, Lakshmi, told police that Rohini had chosen not to marry so she could focus entirely on her career. She had been facing deepening anxiety after multiple visa rejections. “We asked her to pursue medicine in India,” Lakshmi said, adding that Rohini believed the U.S. offered better working conditions, fewer patients per doctor, and higher pay.

Police are examining all angles of the case while awaiting forensic results. The incident has raised concerns about the growing psychological strain faced by young professionals pursuing overseas opportunities.
