India's first indigenously manufactured bullet train is moving closer to track testing, with Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw announcing that the train is expected to begin trials in May or June 2027.
Speaking at the ‘NaMo for Viksit Bharat’ event in Vadodara, Vaishnaw said the first body frame of the high-speed train had recently been completed and sent for a squeeze test to assess its structural strength. He said the train would undergo two to four months of testing before its inauguration.
Vadodara-Mumbai in 90 Minutes
One of the biggest attractions of the high-speed rail project will be the sharp reduction in travel time.
Vaishnaw said passengers travelling from Vadodara to Mumbai could cover the journey in around one-and-a-half hours once the bullet train service becomes operational. The Mumbai-Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail corridor is designed to bring major cities and industrial centres in Gujarat and Maharashtra much closer in terms of travel time.
The overall Mumbai-Ahmedabad journey is expected to take less than two hours, compared with several hours by conventional rail or road.
Indigenous Train Takes Shape
The latest announcement is significant because India is developing its own high-speed train technology rather than relying entirely on imported rolling stock.
The first body frame has been completed and sent for a squeeze test. The testing process will assess whether the structure can withstand the heavy forces and pressure associated with high-speed operation.
The indigenous train is being developed as part of the government's Atmanirbhar Bharat push and could become an important milestone in India's efforts to build domestic capabilities in advanced railway technology.
Trials Planned for 2027
According to the Railway Minister, the train should reach the tracks for testing by May or June next year.
The trial phase is expected to continue for two to four months, during which the train and its systems will be assessed under different operating conditions. Vaishnaw said the bullet train would subsequently be inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
The testing schedule represents a key stage before commercial operations can begin.
Surat-Bilimora First Section
The Mumbai-Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail project will not become fully operational in a single phase. The service is expected to be introduced progressively as individual sections are completed.
The Surat-Bilimora section is expected to be the first stretch to become operational. The Vapi-Surat section is planned for the next phase, followed by the Vapi-Ahmedabad stretch.
The final stages will cover the Ahmedabad-Thane section and subsequently the Mumbai connection.
Mumbai-Ahmedabad Corridor
The high-speed rail project covers the 508-km Mumbai-Ahmedabad corridor, passing through Maharashtra, Gujarat and the Union Territory of Dadra and Nagar Haveli. The corridor will have 12 stations.
Construction has progressed substantially, with work continuing on viaducts, stations, bridges, tunnels, tracks and other systems. The first operational section is expected to provide an early demonstration of India's high-speed rail capabilities before the complete corridor becomes operational.
Boost for Connectivity
The bullet train project is expected to do more than reduce journey times. Faster connectivity could strengthen links between Mumbai, Gujarat's industrial centres and other commercial hubs along the corridor.
The project is also expected to support tourism, employment, industrial activity and regional economic development. The government has projected that high-speed rail will bring manufacturing centres and markets closer together while improving business connectivity.
A New Rail Era
The proposed May-June 2027 testing schedule marks an important milestone in India's high-speed rail journey.
If trials and safety clearances proceed as planned, the first operational sections could begin carrying passengers later in 2027. For travellers, the most visible change will be the dramatic reduction in journey times, with Vadodara-Mumbai travel targeted at around 90 minutes.
The project also represents a broader shift in India's railway strategy towards higher-speed passenger services, modern infrastructure and greater domestic manufacturing capability.
