Jordan Hermann Hits 150 on ODI Debut, Equals World Record

South Africa's Jordan Hermann scored 150 on ODI debut against Namibia, matching Matthew Breetzke's world record for the highest debut score.

South Africa batter Jordan Hermann marked his ODI debut with a record-equalling century, scoring 150 runs against Namibia in Windhoek on Wednesday. The left-hander became only the second batter in men's ODI history to make 150 on debut, matching the mark set by fellow South African Matthew Breetzke in 2025.

Hermann opened the innings for South Africa in the first ODI at the Namibia Cricket Ground and produced an attacking innings from the outset. His 126-ball knock included 17 fours and three sixes, giving the Proteas a strong platform in the opening match of the series.

The 24-year-old fell for exactly 150, meaning he narrowly missed the opportunity to establish a new world record for the highest individual score on ODI debut.

Hermann matches Breetzke's record

Before Hermann's innings, Breetzke held the record after scoring 150 against New Zealand in Lahore on February 10, 2025.

Breetzke had reached his 150 from 148 deliveries, while Hermann matched the score in only 126 balls. Both South African openers now share the highest score recorded by a batter in his first ODI appearance.

The achievement gives South Africa a remarkable distinction, with two of the top two scores on ODI debut now belonging to players from the same country.

Fast start sets up South Africa

Hermann's innings was not built in isolation. He formed a substantial second-wicket partnership with Tony de Zorzi after South Africa lost an early wicket.

The pair added 190 runs from 166 deliveries, with de Zorzi contributing 72 from 84 balls. Their partnership put South Africa firmly in control and allowed Hermann to play with increasing freedom.

Hermann later added another 59 runs from 45 balls with Dewald Brevis. Brevis scored 33 from 28 deliveries as South Africa continued to build momentum.

A place among ODI debut greats

Hermann and Breetzke now occupy the top position on the list of highest scores on men's ODI debut.

West Indies batting great Desmond Haynes previously held the benchmark for decades after making 148 against Australia in St John's in 1978.

Afghanistan's Rahmanullah Gurbaz follows with 127 against Ireland in Abu Dhabi in 2021, while Hong Kong's Mark Chapman scored an unbeaten 124 against the UAE in Dubai in 2015.

South Africa's Colin Ingram, who made 124 against Zimbabwe in Bloemfontein in 2010, is another player inside the top six.

Hermann's rapid rise

Hermann's international breakthrough comes after several seasons of domestic cricket in South Africa. He has represented teams including the Titans and Warriors and has also featured for Sunrisers Eastern Cape in the SA20.

He made his T20I debut for South Africa earlier in 2026 and has continued to build his case for a bigger role in the national setup. His List A record had already shown his ability to score heavily before his ODI opportunity.

Current cricket records list Hermann with a strong List A record, including multiple centuries, underlining that his 150 was not an isolated display of batting ability. (Wikipedia)

One run short of a new world record

The most striking aspect of Hermann's innings is that the record was within touching distance.

Had he added just one more run, his score of 151 would have moved him outright to the top of the list for the highest score on ODI debut.

Instead, his dismissal for 150 means Breetzke and Hermann share the record.

For South Africa, however, the significance goes beyond the number. Having produced two players capable of scoring 150 on ODI debut within an 18-month period, the Proteas have uncovered another promising top-order option ahead of the next phase of their 50-over cricket.
