India-US Trade: Commerce Ministry to Meet Exporters

The Commerce Ministry will hold a meeting with industry associations and representatives of export promotion councils on September 1 to review India-US trade performance and discuss recent developments affecting bilateral commerce. The meeting comes as negotiations between India and the United States on a bilateral trade agreement continue. 

The meeting will be chaired by Commerce Ministry Additional Secretary Darpan Jain, who is also India's chief negotiator for the India-US bilateral trade agreement. Discussions are expected to focus on recent trade trends, sector-wise export performance and developments in bilateral trade.

Export performance to be reviewed

The September 1 meeting will provide the government and industry representatives an opportunity to assess how different sectors are performing in the US market.

Representatives from sectors including pharmaceuticals, engineering, textiles, agriculture, chemicals, marine products, leather, automobiles, auto components, handicrafts and plastics are expected to participate in the discussions. Major industry bodies, including CII, FICCI, Assocham and FIEO, are also likely to be represented. 

India-US trade agreement talks continue

The meeting comes amid continuing negotiations between India and the US on a bilateral trade agreement. Both countries have been working towards expanding bilateral trade and improving market access for exporters.

The Commerce Ministry has been holding consultations with industry stakeholders as negotiations progress, allowing exporters to flag sector-specific concerns and provide inputs on market conditions.

The latest meeting is therefore expected to give the government a clearer picture of the challenges faced by Indian exporters in the US market.

Tariff concerns remain important

Changes in the US tariff regime have added urgency to discussions between Indian policymakers and exporters. Industry representatives are expected to share their assessment of how recent trade developments and tariff conditions are affecting exports across different sectors. 

Sector-wise feedback could also help the government assess areas where Indian exporters require greater market access or policy support.

Goyal's US visit later in September

The September meeting is also taking place ahead of Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal's planned visit to the United States later this month.

Goyal is scheduled to participate in the G20 Trade Ministerial in Milwaukee, beginning September 30, and is expected to hold bilateral discussions with US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer. The United States is the G20 president for 2026. 

The upcoming ministerial-level engagement could provide another opportunity to discuss the India-US trade agreement and broader bilateral commercial issues.

Industry inputs to shape trade discussions

The participation of exporters and industry associations is significant because several sectors have direct exposure to the US market. Their inputs can help the government identify changes in demand, tariff-related challenges and other trade barriers affecting Indian shipments.

The Commerce Ministry's September 1 consultation is consequently expected to serve as an assessment of India's current export position in the US market and provide sector-specific inputs ahead of further bilateral discussions.

India and the US have set an ambitious long-term target of expanding bilateral trade, while negotiations continue on a mutually beneficial trade agreement. The government has previously emphasised the need to ensure competitive market conditions for Indian exporters as part of these negotiations.
