Kathak Guru Shovana Narayan and Prof. Dharmanand: Mentors for a Lifetime By Beenu Rajpoot

Behind every meaningful journey stands a teacher whose guidance quietly shapes a life. For Delhi-based filmmaker and National Award winner Beenu Rajpoot, two such guiding lights have been Professor Dharmanand Sharma and Padma Shri Kathak Guru Shovana Narayan—mentors whose influence transcended classrooms and studios, becoming lessons in living itself.

With a career spanning over fifteen years and accolades including the IDPA National Silver Award, Beenu’s work in documentary cinema reflects a deep reverence for India’s cultural and philosophical traditions. At the core of her creative and personal evolution lies the timeless Indian concept of the Shiksha Guru—a teacher who nurtures intellect, values, discipline, and inner awareness.

Her philosophical grounding took shape at Panjab University, where she studied Indian Philosophy under Professor Dharmanand Sharma. Known for his vast scholarship and gentle authority, Prof. Sharma—former Chairperson of the Department of Philosophy and founder of the Centre for Swami Vivekananda Studies—left an indelible mark on generations of students. “Even as a restless student, I felt seen and guided,” Beenu recalls. “His patience and wisdom drew me into the depth of Indian thought.”

Often described as a living encyclopedia of Sanskrit and Philosophy, Prof. Sharma embodied the traditional Guru–Shishya parampara, offering wisdom that extended beyond academia into the realm of character and consciousness.

A new chapter unfolded when Beenu moved to Delhi and met Padma Shri awardee Kathak Guru Shovana Narayan. Under her mentorship, Beenu discovered that Kathak was not merely a performing art, but a way of life. “Deedi taught me grace—not only in movement, but in conduct,” she says. “She guided me through unfamiliar surroundings, cultural responsibility, and the discipline required to live meaningfully.”

Through their guidance, both mentors shaped Beenu’s creative voice and ethical compass. Today, as she documents India’s artistic and philosophical heritage, Beenu carries their teachings forward—paying homage to gurus whose quiet influence continues to resonate through her work and life.

Today, Beenu Rajpoot’s work stands as a testament to the enduring influence of mentorship, reflecting how the guidance of visionary teachers can shape both individual lives and cultural narratives.
