Lok Sabha Approves Impeachment Motion Against Justice Yashwant Verma

The Lok Sabha has approved an impeachment motion against Justice Yashwant Verma over bribery charges. Speaker has constituted a 3-member committee to initiate the removal process.

Impeachment motion against Justice Yashwant Verma of Allahabad High Court, who is embroiled in cash scam case, has been approved in Lok Sabha. Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla approved the impeachment motion on Tuesday. With the approval of impeachment motion, the process of removing Yashwant Verma has begun. Lok Sabha Speaker has formed a 3-member committee. It includes 1 judge each from Supreme Court and High Court and 1 jurist. This impeachment motion will remain pending till the report of the investigation committee comes.

Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla said, 'I have received a proposal signed by a total of 146 members including Ravi Shankar Prasad and Leader of Opposition. This proposal demands the removal of Justice Yashwant Verma of Allahabad High Court from the post.

A 3-member committee has been formed for investigation. It includes 1 judge each from Supreme Court and High Court and 1 jurist. This impeachment motion will remain pending till the report of the investigation committee comes. Talking about the committee, it includes Supreme Court judge Justice Arvind Kumar, Karnataka High Court senior advocate BB Acharya and Madras High Court Chief Justice Manindra Mohan Shrivastava.

Earlier on July 21, on the first day of the monsoon session, impeachment notices against him were handed over to the presiding officers in both the houses of Parliament. These are signed by 215 MPs of the ruling and opposition parties (152 in Lok Sabha and 63 in Rajya Sabha). This is the first time in independent India that impeachment is being brought against a High Court judge. Former Rajya Sabha Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar gave this information to the MPs on the first day of the monsoon session.

The impeachment motion has received support from MPs of BJP, Congress, TDP, JDU, CPM and other parties. Among the signatories are MPs like Rahul Gandhi, Anurag Thakur, Ravi Shankar Prasad, Rahul Gandhi, Rajiv Pratap Rudy, Supriya Sule, KC Venugopal and PP Choudhary.

Actually, Justice Verma's bungalow in Lutyens caught fire on the night of March 14. It was extinguished by fire brigade personnel. Justice Verma was out of town at the time of the incident. On March 21, some reports claimed that Rs 15 crore cash was found from Justice Verma's house. A lot of notes were burnt. Several videos of the incident also surfaced. In this, sacks full of bundles of burnt notes of Rs 500 each were seen from the store room of the Justice's house. Justice Verma was a Justice of the Delhi High Court at that time. Later he was transferred to Allahabad High Court.
