Massive Fire Engulfs Dehradun Perfume Factory, Rescue Operations Underway

A major fire broke out at Jai Shri Balaji Industry, a perfume manufacturing unit in the Selaqui Industrial Area of Dehradun, around 2 pm on Saturday, engulfing the factory in flames and causing multiple explosions due to stored chemicals. The blaze remained uncontrolled for nearly four hours, posing serious risks to nearby units and prompting a large-scale emergency response.

Twelve to thirteen fire tenders, around 120 fire brigade personnel, and teams from the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) have been deployed to control the fire. Fire Officer Daya Kishan said approximately 80,000 litres of water have been used, but the presence of highly flammable perfumes and chemicals has repeatedly reignited the blaze. “Goods worth several lakhs of rupees have been destroyed, but fortunately, there has been no loss of life,” he added.

The fire is believed to have originated from a short circuit. Four to five workers were present at the factory during the incident; two to three sustained minor burn injuries and are undergoing treatment at a local hospital. Their condition is stable, officials confirmed.

The heat from the fire has caused perfume containers and other chemical products to explode intermittently, intensifying the blaze. Firefighters explained that water poured on burning perfume sometimes triggers chemical reactions, making suppression efforts more challenging.

Authorities have successfully prevented the fire from spreading to nearby factories. Sahaspur MLA Sahdev Pundir, present at the scene, praised the firefighters’ efforts, stating, “Despite extreme risk, the brigade has managed to contain the fire and protect surrounding units.”

The cause of the fire remains under investigation, with the short circuit theory currently being examined. Residents and workers from adjacent units have been evacuated as a precaution, and authorities continue to monitor the site. Firefighting operations are ongoing, and the blaze is expected to take several more hours to be fully extinguished.

The incident underscores the hazards posed by chemical storage in industrial units and the challenges faced by emergency services in densely packed industrial areas.
