Mumbai Trauma Team Performs Complex Limb-Saving Surgery Using Advanced Portable Imaging System
Dr. Amey Narendra Powar Medical Superintendent, ESIS Hospital, Worli, Mumbai
A multidisciplinary trauma team at Employees' State Insurance Scheme Hospital, Worli successfully managed a critical polytrauma case involving a 50-year-old man injured in a road traffic accident in Dahanu, nearly four hours from Mumbai.
The patient sustained compound fractures of both tibias, compound fracture of the left femur, compound fracture of the left patella, and multiple wounds over both lower limbs. Due to impending septicemic shock from multiple open injuries and major internal blood loss associated with fractures of three long bones, the in-charge Orthopedic Surgeon and Head of Unit, Dr. Amey Narendra Powar, decided to perform Damage Control Orthopedics.
Emergency stabilization was performed using bilateral tibial external fixators and a left femur external fixator, followed by extensive wound debridement. The surgery was led by Dr. Amey Narendra Powar (Arthroscopy and Sports Injury Specialist), along with the orthopedic team comprising Dr. Meher Pradeep Kumar Mehta and Dr. Sanket Shrikant Patil, and the anesthesia team comprising Dr. Bushra Shaikh and Dr. Raghav Sharma.
The case was efficiently managed with the coordinated efforts of the OT staff, nursing staff, and ward personnel. A major highlight of the procedure was the use of the REMEX-KA6 portable radiography system, which enabled precise intraoperative imaging and timely fracture stabilization in this high-risk trauma setting.
The REMEX-KA6 portable radiography system was provided to the hospital through the efforts and innovative vision of Hon. Public Health Minister of Maharashtra State, Mr. Prakash Rao Abitkar. These efforts were materialized by Hon. Principal Secretary PHD Mr. E. Raveendran (I.A.S), Hon. Commissioner and Chief Executive Officer MH ESI Society Mr. Ramesh Chavan (I.A.S), and Hon. Medical Director MH ESI Society Dr. Ashok Thorat.
