PM Modi Completes 2,843-km Dedicated Freight Corridor Network

PM Modi completed India’s 2,843-km Dedicated Freight Corridor network by commissioning three final Western DFC sections worth over Rs 20,700 crore.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday dedicated the final three sections of the Western Dedicated Freight Corridor (WDFC) in Gujarat, marking the completion of India’s 2,843-km Dedicated Freight Corridor (DFC) network.
The three newly commissioned WDFC sections — Sanand (North)-Makarpura, New Umbergaon-New Saphale and New Saphale-Jawaharlal Nehru Port Terminal (JNPT) — together cover 326 route kilometres and were developed at a cost of more than Rs 20,700 crore.
The completed network comprises the 1,506-km WDFC between JNPT and Dadri and the 1,337-km Eastern Dedicated Freight Corridor (EDFC) between Ludhiana and Sonnagar. Prime Minister Modi described the completion of the more than 2,800-km corridor as a major milestone for the Gati Shakti programme and India’s logistics transformation.
Final Sections Commissioned
The three sections completed the remaining gaps on the Western DFC.
The New Sanand (North)-New Makarpura section strengthens freight connectivity across Gujarat, while the New Umbergaon-New Saphale and New Saphale-JNPT sections extend the dedicated freight route directly to JNPT near Mumbai.
The government said the new connectivity will facilitate faster movement of export-import cargo, strengthen links between industrial centres and ports and help reduce logistics costs. It is also expected to ease freight pressure on Mumbai’s conventional railway network.
Western Corridor Meets Port
The WDFC connects JNPT with Dadri in Uttar Pradesh, where it links with the Eastern DFC.
This creates a dedicated freight spine connecting western ports and industrial centres with the northern hinterland. The EDFC runs from Ludhiana to Sonnagar, while the WDFC provides access to major western ports and industrial regions.
The corridors are designed for high-capacity freight operations, including higher axle loads and double-stack container trains, particularly on the Western DFC.
Freight Operations Expand
The completed DFC network is already carrying hundreds of freight trains each day.
Recent railway data cited by the government shows that more than 443 trains are operated daily on the DFC network on average. Freight movement has also benefited from higher average speeds, quicker turnaround times and improved operational reliability.
By shifting freight traffic to dedicated routes, the DFC also frees capacity on conventional railway lines. This can allow Indian Railways to operate additional passenger and goods services on existing routes.
Logistics Costs Targeted
A major objective of the DFC project is to improve the efficiency of India's freight transportation system.
Dedicated tracks allow freight trains to operate without competing directly with passenger services for the same railway capacity. Faster transit, higher carrying capacity and double-stack container operations can improve supply-chain efficiency and reduce transportation costs.
The government expects the corridors to strengthen India's logistics ecosystem and improve the competitiveness of industries dependent on the movement of raw materials and finished goods.
Long Project Journey
The DFC project was conceived to create dedicated high-capacity railway routes for freight traffic and reduce congestion on India's conventional network.
The overall network covers 2,843 km, with the Western DFC spanning 1,506 km from JNPT to Dadri and the Eastern DFC covering 1,337 km from Ludhiana to Sonnagar. Earlier government data had shown that most of the network was already operational before the final WDFC sections were commissioned.
The completion of the final sections now puts the full planned length of the two corridors into operation.
Next Freight Corridor Planned
The completion of the existing network is not expected to mark the end of India's dedicated freight expansion.
The government has announced a new Dedicated Freight Corridor connecting Dankuni in West Bengal with Surat in Gujarat. The detailed project report is being prepared, according to the Ministry of Railways.
The expansion plans underline the government's broader focus on shifting more long-distance freight to dedicated rail infrastructure and improving multimodal logistics.
Infrastructure Boost For India
The completed Dedicated Freight Corridor is expected to play a larger role in India's manufacturing, exports and supply-chain infrastructure by connecting industrial regions with major ports.
With the final Western DFC sections now operational, the Dedicated Freight Corridor network provides a continuous dedicated freight system across key eastern, western and northern regions. The government sees the infrastructure as an important component of India's long-term logistics transformation and its push to improve the movement of goods across the country.
