NDA Secures Landslide in Bihar; PM Hails Mandate, Rahul Flags ‘Unfair’ Election

The National Democratic Alliance (NDA) swept the Bihar Assembly elections on Thursday, winning 202 of the 243 seats and securing a decisive return to power. The Mahagathbandhan, which had mounted an aggressive challenge, was reduced to 35 seats, marking a steep decline from its 2020 tally.

The results, declared late Thursday evening, showed significant gains for the NDA. The BJP emerged as the single largest party with 89 seats, while Chief Minister Nitish Kumar’s JD(U) crossed the 80-seat mark—nearly doubling its previous tally. Smaller NDA partners, including the LJP, also posted strong numbers, with the party leading in 19 of the 28 constituencies it contested.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed party workers at the BJP headquarters in Delhi, calling the mandate a “storm of trust” from the people of Bihar. Waving a traditional ‘gamchha’, he said the state had “rejected the era of Katta and Jungle Raj,” and credited women and first-time voters for the alliance’s sweeping victory.

The Mahagathbandhan, led by the RJD, struggled across the state. While Tejashwi Yadav retained Raghopur with a margin of about 12,000 votes, his brother Tej Pratap Yadav lost from Mahua. RJD candidates Ritlal Yadav in Danapur and Bhojpuri actor Khesari Lal Yadav in Chhapra were also defeated. Congress managed to lead in only six seats, while Prashant Kishor’s Jan Suraaj failed to open its account.

Reacting to the outcome, Rahul Gandhi posted on X that the results were “shocking” and alleged the election “was not fair from the beginning.”

The counting process saw sporadic tension, including protests at the Ramgarh seat by BSP supporters alleging irregularities. With the NDA firmly back in power, political observers say the mandate signals a shift in Bihar’s electoral mood and strengthens the alliance’s position ahead of the national political calendar.
