President Droupadi Murmu on Sunday became only the second Indian head of state to undertake a submarine sortie, sailing aboard the Navy's advanced Kalvari-class vessel INS Vagsheer from the Karwar naval base.
As Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces, Murmu donned naval uniform and waved to personnel before boarding. Navy Chief Admiral Dinesh K Tripathi accompanied her during the voyage along the Western Seaboard.
This marks Murmu's first experience on a Kalvari-class submarine and echoes former President's similar sortie in February 2006 aboard INS Sindhurakshak.

INS Vagsheer, the sixth and final Scorpene-class diesel-electric attack submarine under Project-75, was commissioned in January 2025. Built by Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders with French technology transfer, it boasts stealth features that make it a "silent killer" in underwater operations.

The 67.5-metre vessel reaches speeds of 20 knots submerged, dives to over 350 metres, and endures up to 50 days at sea. Armed with torpedoes, anti-ship missiles, and mine-laying capabilities, it excels in anti-surface and anti-submarine warfare, intelligence gathering, and surveillance.
The sortie underscores India's growing indigenous naval prowess amid rising maritime challenges. Officials hailed it as a morale booster for submariners operating in demanding conditions.
