The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has shared the latest information about ₹ 2000 notes. These notes were taken out of circulation in the year 2023, but these notes are still present with the people in large numbers.
More than 98% notes returned, still thousands of crores are left
According to RBI, so far 98.26% of the total ₹ 2000 notes have been returned. Despite this, ₹ 2000 notes worth about ₹ 6,181 crore are still with the people. When these notes were discontinued, at that time ₹ 2000 notes worth a total of ₹ 3.56 lakh crore were in circulation in the market.
When and why were ₹ 2000 notes discontinued?
In May 2023, RBI had announced the phased closure of ₹ 2000 notes. For this, the common people were given a chance to deposit or exchange notes in banks and post offices till September 2023.
RBI said that the use of ₹ 2000 notes was not expected and their purpose was also for a limited time, so it was necessary to remove them.
