After the recent order of the Supreme Court, the MCD has prepared a special action plan to deal with the increasing problem of stray dogs in the capital Delhi. According to municipal officials, the dog catching teams will first focus on removing stray dogs from the premises of government offices, hospitals and schools. Also, unauthorized eating places built at these places will also be removed. Officials say that there is more movement of people in these areas and complaints are often received. In such a situation, initial priority is being given to these places. However, due to the opposition of animal rights activists, the number of dogs caught so far remains limited.
Meanwhile, animal rights activists have expressed displeasure over the decision of the Supreme Court and the action of the MCD. They say that removing dogs from the streets is an interference in their freedom and natural life. Activists argue that the government should first build large and humane shelter homes so that dogs can get a safe and better environment. Some organizations have also warned that if this order is implemented in a hurry, it will have a serious impact on the well-being and health of animals.
The Supreme Court has ordered the authorities to build shelter homes for at least 5,000 dogs within the next six to eight weeks and start a large-scale catching campaign. It has also been asked to ensure that the areas of Delhi and NCR are completely free of stray dogs.
This order has come at a time when in recent months, there were continuous complaints from the general public and institutions regarding incidents of bites and attacks by stray dogs. The court says that this step is necessary keeping in mind public safety and movement of people.
