Sushila Karki Becomes Nepal’s First Woman PM

There has been a historic change in Nepal's politics (Nepal Political Crisis 2025). Sushila Karki, the country's first female Chief Justice, has now taken oath as the interim Prime Minister of Nepal. She took the oath of office and secrecy at a ceremony held at the Presidential residence Sheetal Niwas at 8:45 pm on Friday (local time). She was sworn in by President Ramchandra Paudel. No one else has been made a minister at the moment.

Sushila Karki is not a common face. She started practicing law in 1979 and became a senior advocate in 2007 and was appointed a Supreme Court judge in 2009. She was the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court from July 2016 to June 2017.

The President has announced that a new election of Parliament will be held within the next six months. At the same time, Gen-Z leaders refused to join this government. They say that they will not join the government, but will monitor the functioning of the government. Sushila Karki has also been the first woman Chief Justice of Nepal. She has done post graduation in Political Science from Banaras Hindu University (BHU).

A judge became PM for the second time in Nepal
Sushila Karki is not the first person who has become an interim PM after becoming a judge. The first time this happened was in 2013, when an electoral government was formed under the leadership of Chief Justice Khilraj Regmi.

After the dissolution of the first Constituent Assembly, a political deadlock had arisen in the country. To solve this, all the political parties came to a compromise and gave the responsibility of forming the government to Regmi. His government conducted elections and after this the second Constituent Assembly was formed.
