Uttarakhand Brings Yoga Day to Life in Remote Vibrant Villages

To commemorate International Yoga Day on June 21, 2025, the Uttarakhand Tourism Development Board (UTDB) hosted special yoga events across remote border villages, including Mana, Malari, Jadung, Nilang, Harsil, Dugtu, Nabidhang, and others located in Uttarkashi, Chamoli, and Pithoragarh districts. These villages fall under the Government of India’s Vibrant Villages Programme, aimed at boosting development in frontier areas.

Residents, youth, school children, and personnel from the Indian Army came together in large numbers to participate in these wellness-focused gatherings. Under the expert guidance of trained yoga instructors, attendees engaged in yoga postures (asanas), breathing exercises (pranayama), and meditation techniques — all set against the serene and majestic backdrop of the Himalayas.

The initiative seeks not only to promote the physical and mental health benefits of yoga but also to integrate cultural revival and tourism development in some of the country’s most isolated regions. It aligns with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision to empower rural border communities both socially and economically.

Speaking on the occasion, the Secretary of Tourism and CEO of UTDB highlighted Uttarakhand’s natural suitability for yoga. He reiterated the government’s commitment to developing these villages as emerging yoga tourism hotspots, which would help draw more visitors and create livelihood opportunities for local youth.

The Uttarakhand Tourism Department confirmed that such community-driven programs will continue to be organized in the future to strengthen local economies and drive inclusive development across the border belt.
