Woman Gives Birth on Mumbai Platform with Doctor’s Help over Video Call

A woman gave birth on a Mumbai railway platform with the help of a young man guided by a doctor over a video call. The dramatic incident occurred at Ram Mandir station early on October 14.

Vikas Bedre, a 27-year-old professional cameraman, was traveling by local train when he noticed a woman in distress in the adjoining compartment. The woman, identified as 24-year-old Ambika Jha from Virar, had gone into labor while traveling with her nephew and niece. Realizing the urgency, Vikas pulled the train’s emergency chain as it arrived at Ram Mandir station.

He first tried to find a doctor or ambulance, but when none were available, he contacted his friend, gynecologist Dr. Devika Deshmukh. By then, the baby was already halfway delivered. Under Dr. Deshmukh’s guidance via video call, Vikas borrowed scissors from a nearby tea vendor, gathered some sheets from bystanders, and successfully helped deliver the baby. Both mother and child are healthy.

After the delivery, Vikas thanked his doctor friend on the video call. Eyewitnesses captured parts of the incident, and videos quickly went viral on social media. Many praised Vikas for his quick thinking and bravery, calling him the “real-life Rancho,” referencing Aamir Khan’s character from the film 3 Idiots, who famously helps deliver a baby remotely in a similar situation.

According to eyewitness Manjit Dhillon, Ambika’s family had earlier taken her to a nearby hospital, but were reportedly told that the delivery could not be done there, forcing them to continue their journey by train. After the baby was delivered, the family took Ambika and the newborn to Cooper Hospital in a private ambulance.
