Kamal Haasan Writes to CM Vijay With Suggestions to Strengthen Gram Sabhas, Calls for More Public Participation

Makkal Needhi Maiam chief Kamal Haasan has written to Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Vijay suggesting measures to make Gram Sabhas more effective and increase people’s involvement in local governance.

Actor-politician Kamal Haasan has written to Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Vijay with suggestions aimed at strengthening Gram Sabhas and encouraging greater participation of people at the grassroots level.

In his communication, Haasan highlighted the importance of empowering village-level democratic institutions and ensuring that citizens have a larger role in decisions affecting their communities.

The suggestions focus on improving the functioning of Gram Sabhas, which serve as platforms where villagers can discuss local issues, development priorities and governance-related matters.

Gram Sabhas are an important part of India’s decentralised governance system under the Panchayati Raj framework, allowing registered voters in a village to participate in discussions and decision-making processes.

Haasan, who heads the Makkal Needhi Maiam (MNM), has often advocated greater transparency, citizen participation and reforms in governance. He is also a Rajya Sabha member.

The letter comes amid ongoing political discussions in Tamil Nadu over governance priorities and the role of institutions at the local level. The state is currently governed by Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay-led Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) administration.

Strengthening Gram Sabhas has been a recurring issue in discussions around grassroots democracy, as these meetings can provide residents a direct channel to raise concerns related to infrastructure, welfare schemes, public services and village development.

Haasan’s suggestions place the focus on improving participation rather than limiting governance decisions to administrative bodies alone.

The Tamil Nadu government’s response to the proposals is awaited.
