The Bharatiya Janata Party on Monday announced key organisational appointments for the upcoming Assembly elections in Tamil Nadu and Assam, scheduled to be held in 2026. Union Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal has been appointed the party’s election in-charge for Tamil Nadu, while BJP MP Baijayant Panda has been given charge of Assam.
The decision signals the party’s early preparation for the high-stakes polls in both states. In Tamil Nadu, Union Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal and Union Minister of State for Cooperation and Civil Aviation Muraleedharan Mohol have been named election co-in-charges to assist Goyal. The state is currently governed by the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK)-Congress alliance under Chief Minister M.K. Stalin.
In Assam, Sunil Kumar Sharma, Leader of the Opposition in the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly, and former Union Minister Darshana Jardosh have been appointed as co-in-charges. The BJP is in power in the northeastern state, led by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma.
The appointments come as political parties begin mobilising cadres and finalising strategies well ahead of the 2026 elections. Tamil Nadu, which has 234 Assembly seats, has remained a challenging terrain for the BJP. In the 2021 Assembly elections, the DMK-led alliance secured a sweeping victory, with the DMK winning 159 seats and Congress 18. The alliance also repeated its dominance in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, winning all 39 parliamentary seats in the state.
In Assam, the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance will seek to retain power. In the 2021 Assembly elections, the NDA won 75 of the 126 seats, while the Congress-led opposition secured around 50. The upcoming polls will again be held for all 126 constituencies.
Party leaders said the new in-charges will focus on strengthening organisational structures, coordinating with state units and shaping campaign strategy as the BJP gears up for the 2026 electoral battle in both states.
