Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath inaugurated the Tribal Participation Festival at the Indira Gandhi Foundation in Lucknow on Wednesday, paying tribute to tribal freedom fighter Birsa Munda. The four-day festival, running until November 18, is designed to showcase the art, music, traditions, and welfare initiatives for tribal communities in the state. Entry to the event is free.
During the inauguration, CM Yogi played the traditional mridang while members of the tribal community clapped in rhythm. He highlighted the contributions of Birsa Munda, stating, “Dharti Aaba Bhagwan Birsa Munda fought a significant battle for freedom during British rule. His contribution is remarkable, and we are fortunate to celebrate his birth anniversary.”
The Chief Minister also outlined various government initiatives for tribal welfare, including 145 PM housing units benefiting 815 families in Bijnor, provision of clean drinking water, mobile medical units, anganwadi centres, mobile towers, multipurpose centres, and Van Dhan centres. “It is our privilege to work for them,” he added, emphasizing the state government’s commitment to ensuring tribal communities receive their rightful benefits and inclusion in development schemes.
Following the inauguration, members of the Tharu community from Sonbhadra district performed a traditional group dance, wearing turbans inspired by Birsa Munda and playing the mridang. A young artist captivated the audience by performing a dance on stilts, while over 100 festival stalls offered tribal cuisine, handicrafts, folk paintings, traditional jewellery, and home décor items.
The festival aims to strengthen awareness of tribal culture and promote economic opportunities for local artisans. “Our government has undertaken a mission-mode campaign covering Tharu, Raksa, Sahariya, and other tribal groups,” CM Yogi noted, referencing initiatives like the PM Janman scheme and Adivasi Nyay Maha Abhiyan.
Through this festival, Uttar Pradesh seeks to blend cultural celebration with welfare outreach, highlighting the rich traditions and ongoing development programs benefiting its tribal population.
