The Patna Civil Court has rejected the bail petition of Anant Singh in connection with the murder of Dularchand Yadav, a local RJD leader and Jan Suraj candidate. Singh, a five-time MLA from Mokama, will continue to remain in Beur Jail as the investigation proceeds.
In his petition, Singh maintained his innocence, asserting that he had no connection to the case and describing himself as a victim of political vendetta. “We are innocent in this case. The allegations have been framed to damage my political image,” Singh said. He added that the October 30 clash between political convoys in Basavanchak was limited to a verbal dispute, with no conspiracy or intent, and noted that the post-mortem report indicated death from severe injuries, not gunshot wounds.
The case pertains to the killing of 75-year-old Dularchand Yadav during election campaigning under Ghoswari police jurisdiction in Mokama. Singh and his associates, Manikant Thakur and Ranjit Ram, were arrested on November 1 following police investigations. Patna SSP Kartikeya Sharma confirmed that clashes involved stone-pelting, leading to injuries and eventual death, and that violations of the model code of conduct were evident. The CID has conducted further investigations, corroborating eyewitness accounts of a physical altercation between the two groups.
Despite the ongoing case, Singh secured a decisive victory in the Mokama assembly elections, winning by a margin of 28,206 votes, receiving 91,416 votes against RJD candidate Veena Devi, who secured 63,210 votes. Singh has been elected consecutively since 2005, representing JDU, RJD, and once as an independent. He was previously involved in an AK-47 case, for which he was acquitted before the 2025 elections.
The court’s decision to deny bail ensures Singh’s continued custody as authorities complete investigations. Legal and political observers note that the case could influence both the ongoing electoral narrative in Bihar and the political dynamics of the Mokama constituency.
